Thailand Update

2004 Kings Cup, a few weeks before the Tsunami.
A friend from the Netherlands (SV Alk) wrote this week to say "if you have some sailing enthusiasts that would like to come out here, my email is working again." He's back aboard their boat near Phuket, Thailand, getting ready for the 19th Kings' Cup regatta from Port Klang, Malaysia to Phuket, Thailand.  He's also working with an Andaman Island dive boat this season. It was great to hear the good news, and to reflect on how different things were there 11 months ago.  As I revisted webstories from that time, http://www.langkawitsunami.net and reread emails from the same friend a year ago, I was struck by how suddenly and how quickly time flies.  Last Christmas, they'd been anchored near Phi Phi Don when the Tsunami hit.  While their steel boat was undamaged, like many other people there, they lost loved ones.  It was a tragedy that happened in minutes. The 11 months since has now passed by with unbelievable speed.  I pinch myself.  Yes.  It's been almost a year since that terrible series of waves swept the islands and beaches of the Indian ocean.  I'll try to post more of these updates, revisiting news I'd gotten then from Malaysia, Chagos, South Africa and Maldives.  If you've got updates, please email me and I'll post them in this section.
