When life catches up

341577-203674-thumbnail.jpgHow many people do you know who cruised Borneo?   Dorothy and Harry are a couple from Colorado who took off to experience the world in 1984.  Their travel log is unusual compared to the itineraries of most cruisers of the last decade and their life together a wonderful tale of just that - a life together.  I met Dorothy and Harry in Richard's Bay.  They always found the best bleu cheese and were civilized enough to clean up their boat each evening and make a proper space to enjoy it with the local wine.  When Nancy and I headed out of Richard's Bay in the pre-dawn darkness to make our first run towards the Cape, Dorothy was one of only two souls who made the effort to get up and wish us a bon voyage.  She heard us clearing Harbor Traffic at the entrance and radioed to say farewell.  A year later, after finishing the trip, I heard from Dorothy again. This time, there was news that Harry's health had taken a bad turn. They needed to get him to the US and she was looking at options to bring the boat home herself.  Going around the Cape with a crew is a challenge. Sailing it alone results in books!  In the end, a couple on another boat sailed Whimbrel around the Cape with Dorothy, and the woman from the pair sailed the boat with her to the Caribbean where Harry rejoined the boat.  You can read their story by clicking here.  There are singlehanders by choice and singlehanders that have no choice.  Dorothy didn't have to be either, but without good friends close by, it was close.
